Geoffrey Palmer’s greatest gift was to initiate the establishment of the New Zealand Bill of Rights. His first major failing was his unwillingness to formally codify these rights into civil law and to make all legislation subservient to them. Had he done this we would not have witnessed a Labour PM establishing two classes of New Zealanders, and believing she had a mandate to do so.

His second failure was to insert ‘treaty principles’ into Government legislation without defining what those principles were. This failure has produced a festering sore in race relations that will prove difficult to heal.

Geoffrey is part of the establishment and was never going to look favourably on a Trump Presidency for all the reasons you outline. He is however right about one thing. Democracy is at risk in the West, but not from the so called ‘populists’ but from the very establishment he represents.

In the USA the Democrats sought to disqualify and imprison Trump prior to the election by bringing various charges against him using Democratic leaning Judges and lawyers. We still don’t know what prompted the failed assassination attempt on his life, or who was behind it, or why the sharpshooters overlooking the would be assassin waited until he fired at Trump before shooting him.

In France the leader of the most popular party Marie le pen has been disqualified from competing at the next election on spurious charges. As Lavrentiy Beria, the head of the soviet secret police reportedly said to Joseph Stalin “Show me the man (or woman) and I’ll show you the crime”. Charges were laid against le pen because charges were necessary to protect democracy.

Likewise in Germany the most popular political party the AfD has been designated a “Confirmed right-wing extremist” group by the Federal Intelligence Agency. A precursor to banning them completely. Note well, the most popular political party is likely to be banned to protect Democracy.

In Romania the Presidential elections were recently cancelled because of “Russian Interference” when the ‘wrong’ candidate was about to win. Cancelled to protect Democracy.

Geoffrey can complain about Trump, but it wouldn’t hurt if he took a wider look at the problem.

Perceptive analysis. Self appointed elites like Palmer are blinded by Trump derangement syndrome. He was totally ineffective when given a leadership opportunity. Most of us struggle with Trump's personality traits but 50% of Americans gave him a second chance because the ordinary person felt their way of life and prosperity was threatened. An unusal case of democracy in action in spite of the media and the elites. Being lectured and governed by people who think they know better doesnt cut the mustard. Most economists are opposed to the tarriff wars but lets see what happens whe the dust settles. The simplistic view that tarrifs lead to price inflation ignores the possibility that America or any country can substitue for its imports if in fact they require all of them. China has hollowed out American manufacturing and is now asserting itself militarily. Trump is simultaneously responding to both economic and geopolitical pressure. In this context globalisation and sourcing the cheapest product from anywhere may no longer be optimal. The big unknown is whether his solutions (presumably trade deals) work or work in time for his impatient base.
