HAS THE NATIONAL PARTY been planning to campaign on the Covid experience all along? If so, then its strategists are a lot smarter than their record to date would suggest. Smarter and much more cynical. Covid, as a thing, has been over for at least three years. Most people have put it behind them – usually with a heartfelt sigh of relief. To rake over those feathering embers and then apply the bellows of a Reserve Bank inquiry to them requires an unusually potent mixture of fear and desperation.

If it’s fear driving Nicola Willis’s announcement of an inquiry into the Reserve Bank’s handling of monetary policy during the Covid pandemic, then who, or what, is the Finance Minister afraid of?
