By announcing an inquiry into the Reserve Banks’ handling of monetary policy in the time of Covid, has Nicola Willis come up with a highly-effective solution to National’s electoral problems?

HAS THE NATIONAL PARTY been planning to campaign on the Covid experience all along? If so, then its strategists are a lot smarter than their record to date would suggest. Smarter and much more cynical. Covid, as a thing, has been over for at least three years. Most people have put it behind them – usually with a heartfelt sigh of relief. To rake over those feathering embers and then apply the bellows of a Reserve Bank inquiry to them requires an unusually potent mixture of fear and desperation.
